The Cape Hunters and Game Conservation Association (Kaapjag) realises the importance of conservation in ensuring our freedom to hunt. Without conservation, the next generation will not have the pleasure of experiencing wild animals in their natural habitat, and our children will not know the joy of harvesting wild animals in wild places for food.
In the present day of fenced land, conservation is all about managing the available habitat and the populations of wild animals that inhabit those areas. Preserving the balance between available habitat and the carrying capacity of the land is essentially what conservation is all about. This is where hunting comes in. Hunters contribute financially to ensure that huntable wild animals have value and because of that, these animals are preserved.
If managed well, excess animal populations will eventually occur in the available habitat and then become available to hunters to harvest. If the activity is performed sustainably, the next generations will also be able to share in the abundance our land offers.
At Kaapjag we understand our role in conservation. This is why one of our objectives as expressed in our Constitution is to:
“Promote the knowledge of and love for wildlife and nature and to collaborate with all governments, organisations, institutions or individuals who pursue the same or related objectives in the conservation, protection, development and distribution of fauna and flora.”
Our Conservation portfolio under the expert guidance of Peter Hardcastle has in a short space of time contributed significantly towards the above-mentioned objective.
Peter is a man with a passion for the outdoors and in particular photography. He not only shoots animals with his camera, but he is also an avid hunter.
Peter has been instrumental in the drafting of an MOU between Kaapjag and Cape Nature and has been instrumental in ensuring that Cape Nature will continue to acknowledge the role that hunters play in preserving our natural heritage.

We look forward to working with Cape Nature and other industry partners to contribute to true conservation efforts under the guidance of Peter Hardcastle.
