Let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of rimfire shooting with both a shotgun and a handgun.

RIMFIRE SHOTGUN

Rimfire shotguns are a less common type of firearm compared to centerfire shotguns. Rimfire refers to the ignition system of the ammunition, where the firing pin strikes the rim of the cartridge case to ignite the primer. While rimfire shotguns exist, they are relatively rare and not as widely used as centerfire shotguns.

RIMFIRE HANDGUN

Rimfire handguns, on the other hand, are pretty popular and come in various models and calibres. They are typically chambered for .22 Long Rifle (LR) ammunition, the most common rimfire cartridge for handguns. Rimfire handguns are known for their ease of use, affordability, and relatively low recoil, making them great options for beginners, target shooting, plinking, and small game hunting.

ADVANTAGES OF RIMFIRE SHOOTING

a. Affordability: Rimfire ammunition, particularly .22 LR, is generally more affordable compared to centerfire ammunition, allowing shooters to enjoy extended practice sessions without breaking the bank.

b. Lower Recoil:  Rimfire handguns and shotguns tend to have lighter recoil compared to their centerfire counterparts. This makes them more manageable for beginners, individuals with a lower tolerance for recoil, or those focusing on precision shooting.

c. Versatility:  Rimfire handguns and shotguns are versatile firearms that can be used for various purposes. They are often used for target practice, recreational shooting, plinking, small game hunting, and even competition shooting in disciplines like Rimfire Challenge or Steel Challenge.

d. Accessible Training: Rimfire handguns and shotguns offer a great platform for new shooters to learn fundamental shooting skills, proper firearm handling, and marksmanship techniques before progressing to larger calibres.

LIMITATIONS OF RIMFIRE SHOOTING

a.  Limited Power: Rimfire cartridges, especially the .22 LR, have relatively lower power when compared to centerfire cartridges. This limits its effective range and makes it less suitable for specific applications, such as long-range shooting or hunting larger game.

b. Rimfire Reliability: Rimfire ammunition, due to its construction, can be slightly less reliable compared to centerfire ammunition. Misfires or failure to ignite can occur, though they are relatively rare.

c.  Smaller Calibre Options: Rimfire handguns and shotguns are primarily chambered in .22 LR or smaller calibres. This limits the variety of ammunition available and may not offer the same stopping power or versatility as larger calibres.
